He enlisted at Nottingham during August 1914 and served with 8th Bn Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed by shell fire, having already been wounded and making his way to a dressing station, after the assault at Bazentin on the Somme on July 15th 1916. Any hopes that Cooper had been taken prisoner were finally dispelled nine months later by official letter (see photo).
