He was the son of Mrs Mullins of 70 Princes Street Eastwood Nottinghamshire and the brother of Miss J Mullins of 20 Church Street New Basford Nottingham. His brother Thomas served in Palestine with the South Nottinghamshire Hussars for five years suffering bouts of dysentery and enteric fever.

He enlisted at Pontefract Yorkshire. He servedfor four years first with the King's Royal Rifle Corps before transferring to the 18th Bn Gloucestershire Regiment. He was severely wounded in September 1916.
