Rodney was the only son of the Reverend Mark and and Evelyn Richardson of St. John's Vicarage, Huddersfield. He was baptised by his father on 1st November 1898. On both the 1901 and 1911 Censuses the family was living at St John's Vicarage, 47 St John's Road Huddersfield.
He attended St Cuthbert's College Sparken Hill Worksop. 1910-1915
