Edward was the son of David a hosier/outfitter and Mabel Hallam (née Earnshaw) who lived at 33 Parkers Road Nether Hallam Sheffield . His siblings were Beatrice, David, Evelyn and Kenneth.
He attended St Cuthbert's College 1910-1911 and became an engineering student at Sheffield University.

He died in France of pneumonia and is buried in Tourcoing (Pont-Neuville) Communal Cemetery, Grave Reference: M 1
His brother Kenneth Gordon Earnshaw Hallam born 1899 also served during the Great War in the 3rd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. He was discharged following the end of the war.
