Fred was the son of William Frederick, a draper and grocer and Eliza Gilbert of 8 Kilnhurst Road Ryecroft Rawmarsh Rotherham. William and Eliza had eight children two dying in infancy. Fred's survivng siblings were Martin, May, Gwendoline, Mary and Beulah. In 1911 the family was living in Barlborough near Chesterfield.
He attended St Cuthbert's College 1895-1897. He was an assistant in his father's business in 1911.

9th (Glasgow) Bn Highland Light Infantry
Fred enlisted at Rotherham and served with service number 24519 in the York and Lancaster Regiment later transferring to the Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action at Poix Du Nord and is commemorated on the Vis En-Artois memorial, Pas De Calais, France.
