Tooms volunteered for service, attesting on 16 September 1914 at Nottingham. On 10 November 1914 he was posted to 7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and following training he arrived in France on 28 February 1915. In early 1916 the battalion was in trenches in the Mont St. Eloi area. He was buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont St Eloi.
According to a descendent, Charles' father came from Ireland and the family's surname may have been previously either Tombs or Toombs. However, it seems that all Frederick's descendents took the name 'Tooms'.
