Father: Mark Pearson Brooke, born 1850 at Nottingham and working as a surgeon dentist. Mother: Florence Mary Brooke, born 1860 at Derby. He had five brothers, Frank C., born 1880, William E., born 1883, Mark P., born 1885, Frederick H., born 1890 and Arthur E., born 1890. He also had two sisters; Florence M., born 1882 and Ethel M., born 1888. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 60a Shakespeare Street, Nottingham, before moving to 8 Upton Drive, Sherwood, Nottingham. They were sufficiently prosperous to employ to domestic servants. John Stanley Brooke was the husband of Rose Mary Beck, formerly Brooke, of 52 St. Paul's Street, Radford, Nottingham before moving to 11, Mayfield Terrace, Curtis Street, Meadows, Nottingham. They had two children; Rose Mary, born 08/11/1913 and Thomas Edward, born 23/05/1915.

9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Pte. Brooke volunteered for service, attesting on 30/11/1914 at Nottingham. He was sent to Normanton Barracks, Derby, the Sherwood Foresters' Depot on 02/12/1914, and was posted to 'C' Company, 9th battalion on 09/12/1914. The battalion trained at Frensham, Surrey before entraining for Liverpool on 30/06/1915. The battalion sailed on "Empress of Britain" on July 1st and arrived in Alexandria, Egypt on July 12th. They then sailed for Gallipoli, landing on Cape Helles on July 21st and spending the rest of the month improving the trenches. On 06/08/1915 they landed at Suvla Bay and were involved in heavy fighting at Ismail Oglu Tepe before finally withdrawing. The battalion was relieved on 12/08/1915 before moving to attack Hetman Chair and it was there that Pte. Brooke was killed in action during the advance. His name was commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
