Private
1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Walter Burkitt enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters and sometime after 1st January 1916 was posted to the 1st battalion in France. The 24th April 1917 saw the battalion at Heudecourt and Villers-Guislain, engaged in heavy fatigue work, improving the front line and communications trenches. This was always dangerous work but it would seem that Walter was the only man killed that day. He is buried in Caudry British Cemetery, grave IV.C.2. This was a German cemetery at the time of Walter's death and therefore it is possible he was wounded, captured and died in German hands. John Morse
