Parish Councils

In Nottinghamshire there are:

• 153 Parish Councils
• 8 Town Councils
• 38 Parish Meetings.

Together these cover about half the population of the county, including all of rural Nottinghamshire and some of its towns. They range in size from 20 residents to nearly 25,000. You can find information for each parish or town council through the A-Z list of parish and town councils. The pages are updated regularly on behalf of local councils.

Parish and Town Councils have a wide range of functions and duties and form the third tier and most local unit of democratically elected local government. Elections for their councillors are normally held at the same time as district council elections. Information about parish councils and dates of parish meetings are available from district councils.

Some of Nottinghamshire's parish/town councils have now acquired Quality Parish Council Status. Eastwood Town Council was the first in Nottinghamshire and has now been followed by Cotgrave Town Council, Radcliffe on Trent Parish Council, Bingham Town Council, Everton Parish Council, Gringley on the Hill Parish Council, Misterton Parish Council, East Leake Parish Council, Normanton on Soar Parish Council, Ranskill Parish Council and Warsop Parish Council. Some parish councils have also produced Parish Plans.

The county council works with local councils to strengthen relationships. This work includes:

• Communication and consultation on the range of standards described in the Code of Practice. You can print out a word version of the Code of practice [Word 137KB] or a pdf version of the Code of Practice [PDF 305KB] is available online, including specific service areas chosen by the parish
• Involvement in developing local area forums
• Devolution of a limited range of services.  A number of initiatives, for example, grass cutting, are being piloted by Environment Department
• Joint working on certain projects. These range from community safety initiative and environmental improvement schemes, to the Parish Paths Partnership
• Co-ordination and distribution of the bi-monthly newsletter for parish councils, Countylink.
