The Highway Authorities are responsible for maintaining almost 2,500 miles of roads and a further 2,000 miles of footpath, and all major roads in the county are treated each winter.
Winter road conditions and weather information are continually assessed using the best available advice and technology. From October to April the Highway Authorities and Agents provide cover 24 hours per day, every day of the week, specifically to ensure a prompt and effective response to weather affecting the highways. School Travel Plans aim to reduce congestion, encourage walking and cycling and improve road safety in the vicinity of schools. Individual schools address the problems identified by their own school community with the support of the School Travel Plan team.
Road Safety Education
Programmes of education for secondary and primary schools are planned at several schools throughout the area.
The road safety team have interactive projects for all age groups from reception to Post-16 which will raise awareness of relevant road safety issues for their age group. A visit by the road safety team to carry out these projects can be arranged by schools with the road safety office. tel: 0115 9774373.
This month, primary schools are being invited to take part in the preliminary round of the Junior Road Safety Quiz which will begin in January 2009.
There are currently vacancies for permanent patrols in Rushcliffe, Broxtowe and Gedling. There are also vacancies for relief patrols throughout all areas. Dead Lane/Cossall Road, Cossall – An accident remedial scheme is being undertaken consisting of surfacing, bend signing upgrades and vegetation maintenance. Works are anticipated to take place under a road closure in January 2009.
Middle Street Area, Beeston – Parking restrictions are to be proposed on B6464 Middle Street, B6006 Station Road, Union Street and Acacia Walk as part of the new Tesco development. Public consultation will proceed pending an amendment to the planning application by Tesco.
Stapleford Road, Trowell – To enable Severn Trent Water to undertake Sewer replacement work it will be necessary to have a temporary road. Specific details are still to be confirmed but it is expected to commence in February/March 2009 and continue for 4-5 months. During the closure temporary traffic signals will be in use at the

Bonner Hill, Calverton – An accident remedial scheme is being undertaken featuring road markings, red surfacing, vegetation trimming and improved signing. Works are scheduled to take place from Friday 3 October and will require a road closure on one Sunday.
Mile End Road & Private Road No.1,Colwick - Highway Maintenance Works 2008/09 - Work will continue on site until mid-December. The work involves carriageway and footway resurfacing, rekerbing, drainage improvements and the replacement of road markings. Traffic management will be using stop and go signs all in accordance with Chapter 8 and the Contractor is Notts Highways Partnership (NHP).
Cavendish Road/Belper Avenue,Carlton - BBC Environmental Improvements 2008/09.- Work will continue on site and should be completed just beforethe Christmas shutdown period. The work involves the improvements to shop forecourts with footway resurfacing, rekerbing, pedestrian crossing improvements and the installation of new street furniture. Traffic management will be in accordance with Chapter 8 and the Contractor is Notts Council Highways Operations.
Balmoral Road/Chaworth Road, Netherfield - BBC Programme 2008/09 - Step Refurbishment - Works will continue on site throughout December and should be completed just before the Christmas shutdown. Works involve improving the existing steps which are currently in very poor condition. Traffic management will be in accordance with Chapter 8 and the Contractor is Notts Council Highways Operations.
A612 Church Road, Burton Joyce Highway Maintenance Works 2008/2009.- Works will commence on site 19 January 2009 and last for approx 4 months. These major works involve carriageway reconstruction, footway resurfacing, rekerbing, installation of new drainage systems, and installation of a new cycle track facility (on the north footway) and the replacement of road markings. Traffic management will be using portable traffic signals (manually controlled) or stop and go signs all in accordance with Chapter 8. To minimise delays and congestion the permissible working hours will be restricted to 9:30am to 3:00pm, however works may still takeplace outside of these hours working off the carriageway with no requirement for portable signals or stop and go signs. Please be advised to look out for advanced information signs in the near future.

Carlton Hill and Standhill Road, Carlton - Nottinghamshire County Council are constructing a new pedestrian crossing and carrying out drainage works. Subsequently they will require a road closure on Standhill Road between 15 and 22 February 2009. Station Road, Widmerpool. A606 to Widmerpool Village. Carriageway strengthening 1 to 26 December 2008. NHP Tarmac are the Contractors for the works. Works to be carried out under temporary traffic control.
Central Avenue and Bridgford Road, West Bridgford. Urgent road repairs. scheduled for 18 and 25 January 2009. Works to be carried out by NHP Tarmac under road closure from 7:30am -7:00pm. Traffic will be diverted via Bridgford Road, Musters Road and Rectory Road.
Kirk Hill and Kneeton Road East Bridgford, Nottingham. Between A6097 and Lammas Lane - Carriageway and footway repairs and resurfacing. 8 December to 31 January 2009. The contractor for the works is NHP Tarmac. The Emergency Contact is the N.C.C Duty Officer tel: 01455 828884.
It is anticipated that the majority of the works will be carried out using temporary traffic signal control between the hours of 7:30am - 6:00pm Monday - Saturday. However, due to the nature of the works and the restricted road widths it will be necessary to alter the section of highway between A6097 and Trent Lane crossroads into a ‘ONE WAY’ System. The 'ONE WAY' System will be in operation from 8:00am – 6:00pm Monday – Friday, commencing 5 January 2009 for approximately 2 weeks. During these times access will only available to vehicles traveling on Kirk Hill from the crossroads to the A6097. There will be no access on to Kirk Hill from the A6097. All affected traffic will be diverted on to A46, Butt Lane and Main Road.
Hawksworth Gateway Scheme – A scheme is being undertaken to improve the speed limit and village name plate signing in Hawksworth. The works will include the removal of a redundant bus shelter and will be designed to be in keeping with the character of the village. These works are now complete.
Owthorpe Road to Woulds Field Footpath, Cotgrave Gating Order – It is proposed to introduce a Gating Order at the above location to close the footpath on a 24 hour basis in order to curb problems of crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. A barrier would be constructed at the Owthorpe Road end of the footpath and kept locked except for emergency access. The Gating Order has been approved to proceed. Planning Permission is currently being sought for the barrier and will be under consideration until 19 January 2009.
Gilliver Lane & Church Gate, Clipston-On-The-Wolds Proposed 30mph Speed Limit - As part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Village Speed Limit Review, it is proposed to introduce a 30mph Speed Limit Order in Clipston-On-The-Wolds. Public consultation has now ended and the Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways will make a decision in December on whether to proceed with the scheme in the light of the objections received. If approved, it is anticipated that the scheme’s construction will commence February/March 2009.
Tithby Road, Bingham – To enable Nottinghamshire County Council to undertake essential bridge repairs a temporary road closure will be in place from 7:30am on 13 October 2008 until 4:00pm on Saturday 28 March 2009. A606 Melton Road, Tollerton – A new cycle route with accompanying toucan crossings will be constructed between 10 November 2008 and 6 February 2009 by Nottinghamshire County Council. The work will be carried out in three stages at the following locations:
