The 'Planning and funding extended schools': A guide for schools, local authorities and their partner organisations is published by the DfES and is intended to support the 'Every Child Matters' agenda.
The publication reinforces the key messages set out in the Nottinghamshire Strategy for Extended Services in and Around Schools and the 'developing extended services' toolkit.

This document follows the earlier extended services prospectus, 'Extended Schools: access to opportunities and services for all' published in 2005, which sets out the vision for extended schools.
The above document updates that vision with some of the huge amount of learning that has been developed by schools, local authorities and other partners since then.

Partnership Working
Our Shared Future [PDF 1.1MB] 
Published by the Commission on Integration and Cohesion, the document defines cohesion and integration. Education is identified as being one of the four key spheres promoting interaction. It refers to the guidance on the duty to promote community cohesion, and schools are urged to 'develop clear partnerships that make use of the school's status as a community hub'.
Reaching Out: Think Family [PDF 529KB] 
Published by the Cabinet Office Social Exclusion Task Force, this document is the first part of the Families at Risk Review setting out emerging policy for the minority of families who have not been able to take advantage of the recent Every Child Matters initiatives. It explores the multiple problems some families face and the cost of social exclusion. On extended services it says 'This recognises the crucial role that schools can play in engaging with the family and providing a hub for integration of wider services'.

Schools
Guidance on the Duty to Promote Community Cohesion [264KB]

This DCSF document is non-statutory guidance that explains what is meant by community cohesion and describes how schools may contribute and promote community cohesion. Extended services core offer is one of three areas where schools may contribute and Ofsted inspection of the contribution that schools make to community cohesion will commence in September 2008.
