County's gritting teams out again tonight with road temperatures below freezing

07 December 2017

Nottinghamshire County Council’s gritting teams will be out again tonight (Thursday) with road temperatures set to be below freezing once again.

For the second time this winter, teams will also be out gritting severe weather routes after all main gritting routes have been treated ( A and B roads and bus routes)

The severe weather run includes gritting one road to all major settlements, access roads to special schools and some steep residential roads

There is also the potential for the county’s gritting teams to be out over Friday and the weekend, subject to conditions and road temperatures, with forecast suggesting the cold snap will continue until Monday.

Teams are planning to grit priority footpaths tomorrow night (Friday) and additional drivers are also on standby.

Weather data is monitored from Via East Midlands’ Newark deport – Via is managing highways services on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council as they work in partnership on the ongoing annual winter planning preparations.  The teams will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The County Council and Via East Midlands also work with district and parish councils to ensure the maximum practical winter support can be provided to communities across the county.

We stockpile 20,000 tonnes of salt at the start of the winter – well above Government recommendations and salt is distributed from four depots across the county – based at Markham Moor, Bilsthorpe, Newark and Gamston.

In addition to salting roads, the county council and Via East Midlands provide, maintain and fill around 1,300 roadside grit bins across the county for use by local communities on pavements and roads (not private driveways).

If needed, be prepared and plan your route with help using the gritting routes – check the online maps: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/gritting
