Did you have a mental block with maths at school or a teacher who put you off literacy for life? Is it holding you back at work or preventing you from applying for other jobs or further education opportunities? Do you find it challenging when supporting children with their homework?
Is it time you gave maths or literacy a second chance?
The Council is offering employees the opportunity to brush up their skills with friendly and approachable trainers from Loughborough College. The free 10 week Business English and Numeracy courses lead to a recognised qualification, equivalent to a GCSE pass. Both courses start this autumn and will run at County Hall.
One person who has already faced her fears and passed the numeracy course is Paula Buchanan who works in Business Support for Planning Services.
“It was when I started looking at night school courses at Clarendon College that I realised I would need a GCSE pass to be eligible,” says Paula.
“I didn’t enjoy maths at school, part of the problem was that the maths teacher could not control the class, so I ended up with not a very good CSE grade and a lack of understanding of some key maths functions. I basically gave up.
“When you get older you see life differently. Although a GCSE had once seemed unattainable to me, I now knew that I could rise to the challenge by taking things step by step, being determined and by not being afraid to ask for help.
“I enrolled with Learning and Development for the 10 week numeracy course last year. The tutor was great. I made myself think things through properly and not feel daunted by the more difficult aspects. Ratios and Averages were my favourites.
“At the end I took the exam and passed. I’m quite proud of my achievement. I'm not planning on applying for anything else at the moment, although I know it will stand me in better stead for future training courses or job opportunities.
"It’s something I did for myself. I set myself a challenge and achieved it – that was the real reward."
