Over the past few weeks, we have noticed an increase in the number of calls about Lottery scams and also those where people are told they are entitled to claim a "lost" inheritance. People have been contacted by post and telephone.
There is no miracle cure for stopping unwanted telephone calls. However, there are several steps you can try to help reduce the number of calls:
a) Be very cautious who you give you phone number to. If you do need to provide you number to an organisation, consider telling them that you do not want your number being passed to a 3rd party.
b) Registering for the Telephone Preference Service can help reduce the amount of unwanted calls. Mobiles can also be registered. Click here for details of the Telephone Preference Service.
There is no annual subscription for the above. You only pay for the cost of the call / internet connection. There are companies that will charge you for this service.
c) Silent Callgard may also help reduce the number of unwanted silent calls. Click here for further details.
We have also come across a number of people that have lost a huge amount of money through various scams. If you know of anyone that you believe is a victim of a scam, please call Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline (08454 04 05 06) so we can arrange some support for either yourself or the victim.
Details of measures to help prevent unwanted post appeared in previous message made in August.
