Staff Absence

This is a flexible annual insurance scheme which is available to schools who also buy our HR Advice, Support and Training package. The scheme helps schools secure income towards the cost of cover for absent staff without the exclusions associated with some private sector products.

The scheme is flexible, suiting the needs of your school. You choose the level of cover you wish. There are 2 levels of cover; standard and premium, with the charges for the scheme set out in the table below. There is no change to the charges for the scheme in 2013/14 from 2012/13.

In order to minimise unnecessary additional costs to members of the scheme, all schools admitted are required to take reasonable steps to manage staff absences effectively and pro-actively by applying the appropriate schools policies and procedures.

Costs of teacher and school support staff cover are based on prices per pupil on roll for Primary and Secondary schools. Special school costs are based on the weighted pupil profile.

What we offer:

  • Both levels of package cover sickness, jury service suspension and paternity leave and salary costs for staff on maternity and adoption leave.
  • The scheme covers teachers, teaching and classroom assistants, secretarial and clerical staff, technicians, librarians and mid-day supervisors.
  • The following categories of staff are not included: DSO staff, caretakers, site managers and out of school hour's activity staff.
  • Supplementary quotations are available from HR on request for kitchen staff or cleaners employed by the school.

Standard protection refundable element:

  • Teachers - £110 per day
  • Support staff - £55 per day
  • MDSA - £3.50 per hour

Premium protection refundable element:

  • Teachers - £125 per day
  • Support staff - £60 per day
  • MDSA - £3.50 per hour

Example 1:

Secondary school with 1,000 pupils buying standard protection for teachers, 3-20 days cover

Cost = 19.91 x 1,000 = £19,910

This enables the school to claim for cover used from the 3rd day of a sickness absence to the 20th. If the absence becomes long term the school cannot claim. The school will receive £110 for each day of cover used in the absence of a teacher.

Example 2:

Primary school with 100 pupils buying premium protection for support staff, 3-195 days cover

Cost = 5.48 x 100 = £548

This enables the school to claim for cover used from the 3rd day of absence to the 195th, which covers the entire academic year, should the absence be long term. The school will receive £60 for each day in the absence of a member of the support staff.

In all cases we ask for evidence of the cover used (e.g. agency timesheets or a check of NCC's online claiming system) and there is no limit to the number of times a school can claim for a particular employee who is absent on a regular basis, provided the number of days fits within the option chosen.

The staff absence scheme is linked to the HR Advice, Support and Training package and schools are required to give a minimum of 6 months’ notice in order to cease use of the scheme.

  • The offer is completely flexible - you choose the level of package which best suits the needs of your school.
  • The scheme has a capped payment system which avoids the possibility of premium surcharges. If the level of demand in any school term exceeds the funds available, payments to schools will be reduced proportionately. Any surplus can be carried forward to the next term or refunded to participating schools at the end of the financial year.
  • Funds will be allocated and paid on a percentage basis termly as follows: summer term 30%, autumn and spring terms 35%.
