Schools and Families Specialist Services

We are a team of specialist teachers and teaching assistants with additional qualifications and extensive experience in working with children and young people with special educational needs aged from 0-19.

Teaching, advice, support and training for pupils with the most complex needs, and for the staff who work with them, is available free of charge to all Nottinghamshire schools, including academies. 

Additionally, all schools are able to purchase a range of training and consultancy services, which can be tailored to meet your individual requirements.

What we offer:

  • Training and consultancy on the educational implications of a range of special educational needs including autism, dyslexia, sensory impairment, speech, language and communication needs, Down Syndrome, dyscalculia, profound and multiple learning needs, emotional, social and behavioural needs.
  • Assessment and target setting for pupils with special educational needs. This includes training on P Scales, PIVATS, Portage ( for very young children), specialist language and other assessment methods.
  • The Inclusion Development Programme and the DfE Advanced Training Materials for Autism, Dyslexia, Speech, Language and Communication Needs and BESD, plus the DfE Advanced Training Materials for moderate learning difficulties.
  • Working with parents and carers.
  • Signs and Symbols and other augmentative and alternative communication methods including BSL.
  • Inclusive technology and specialist software for pupils with special educational needs, including sensory impairments.
  • Literacy and numeracy interventions and differentiation.
  • Ofsted planning, preparation and follow up in relation to special educational needs.
  • School self-evaluation of inclusive practice.
  • Transition planning and person-centred approaches.
  • Environmental audits for pupils with a sensory impairment.
  • Midday supervisor training in relation to emotional and social development.

Costs:

All training and consultancy as detailed under 'What we offer':

  • £70 per hour
  • £200 per half day
  • £350 per day.

These costs are based on all training/consultancy to schools as detailed above in Section 1 which is provided by a specialist teacher from the Schools and Families Specialist Services Team. Costs for a senior teacher/practitioner will be slightly higher.

Further information:

We are able to provide support, advice and training to meet the needs of pupils with the most complex needs free of charge to all Nottinghamshire schools, including academies. This type of support is usually negotiated at Family Springboard meetings or through the Educational Psychology Service. The training described above is available for purchase in addition to the core offer.
