Education Library Service

"Students who are highly engaged in a wide range of reading activities are more likely than other students to be effective learners and to perform well at school". ('PISA in Focus' OECD 2011)

Schools need a wide range of resources to support the curriculum and encourage students to read for pleasure. We offer a range of services to help schools achieve this:

The Loan Collection Service gives access to over 300,000 high quality resources suitable for all age and ability levels, including picture books, novels, non-fiction books, big books, posters, DVDs and CDs. There are two options - the Standard Service and the Unlimited Exchanges Service (the latter allows you to exchange your resources as often as you wish at no extra charge). With either option, our mobile library can visit your school to allow children to be involved in choosing reading materials.

Our Advisory Service can also provide you with tailored and specialist support including:

  • Developing your School Library - can help with all aspects of developing and managing your school library, from planning a completely new library to the redevelopment of an existing one.
  • Book Talks and Storytelling to Pupils - a librarian can visit your school to tell stories to younger children and promote reading for pleasure to older children.
  • School Librarians' Support Package - provides professional development, current awareness and individual advice and support for qualified school librarians in secondary schools.

What we offer:

  • High quality resources for all ages and abilities from 3 to 16 year olds, selected by specialist librarians with an in-depth knowledge of the curriculum and the range of resources available
  • Your staff can visit the Education Library Service base to select their own collections; librarians are always available to advise on appropriate resources
  • Online catalogue available showing all resources stocked
  • Order your resources by phone, fax or e-mail and they will be delivered direct to school at no extra charge

  • Individually tailored advice on library policy formulation and all aspects of planning, designing and organising your school library, including library automation

  • Subscribing secondary schools can participate, free of charge, in the Brilliant Book Award, intended to inspire Key Stage 3 students to enjoy reading
  • School Librarians' Support Package offers regular meetings, inset, newsletters, booklists and individual advice and support as required
  • Inset or staff meetings on any aspect of the school library can be delivered on-site or at the Education Library Service base
