Volunteering in Libraries

Get involved

We have a number of  volunteering roles based in our smaller local community libraries which are open to volunteers over the age of 16. Want to know more?

We appreciate your interest and value the time and help that volunteers can give to Nottinghamshire Libraries.

We are working hard to match up roles and volunteers. So please bear with us if it takes a little time to contact you.

Roles

Library Volunteer

Library Volunteers will extend and enhance the library services we provide. They will give support for everyday activities in the library, alongside NCC staff, to improve community access to the service.

A volunteer assistant must be prepared to commit to a regular time - a three or four hour session a week or fortnight. Our commitment is to offer training and regular support and the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.

Key Tasks:

  • Meeting and greeting library customers
  • Helping customers to find the resources they want
  • Re-shelving books and keeping the library safe and tidy
  • Undertaking selected library routines and procedures
  • Helping customers logon to computers
  • Assisting with library events and clearing up afterwards.
  • Helping to maintain the book stock by carrying out cleaning and repairs
  • Helping with library displays
  • Helping to promote the library service in the community

Special Project Volunteer

Library Volunteers will extend and enhance the library services we provide. They will, alongside NCC staff, give support for library activities which may not be always be based in a library building and may involve late evening and weekend sessions.

The Library Service is committed to volunteering and offers training and regular support along with the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.

Key Tasks:

  • Meeting and greeting library customers
  • Assisting with library events and clearing up afterwards
  • Helping to promote the library service in the community
  • Supporting the annual activities programme e.g. Summer Reading Challenge, Southwell Poetry Festival
  • Supporting Book sales – pricing, setting up furniture, unpacking stock, replenishing, closing down.
  • Undertaking consultations and surveys - interacting with library users and potential users.

Activity Volunteer

Activity Volunteers will extend and enhance the library services we provide. They will, alongside NCC staff, give support for library activities.

The Library Service is committed to volunteering and offers training and regular support along with the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.

Key Tasks:

  • Meeting and greeting library customers
  • Supporting the promotion of the library service in the community
  • Supporting and helping in the organising and delivery of library based sessions e.g. Story and Rhyme sessions, Book groups, knit and natter, computer learning sessions etc.
  • Helping to supervise and deliver children’s holiday activities
  • Helping with event preparation and setting up the library, tidying after the event.
  • Preparing and offering refreshments

Library Ambassador

Library Ambassadors will support promoting the role of the library within the community and encourage library usage. They will, alongside NCC staff, promote the value of libraries and reading to local communities.

The Library Service is committed to volunteering and offers training and regular support along with the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.

Key Tasks:

  • Help to promote the library service in the community
  • Provide links to local groups, schools, playgroups, children’s centres and other organisations and to help them realise the benefits of library usage.
  • To support in the promotion of the library agenda in the local community.
  • To support in the promotion of the library as a local community resource

IT Volunteer

Nottinghamshire Libraries run a free IT training programme called "Try IT". It provides basic, informal IT training to members of the public, often on a one to one basis. IT volunteers will extend and enhance this library service to meet an increased customer demand. The Library Service is committed to volunteering and offers training and regular support along with the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.

What’s in it for you?

  • An opportunity to meet new people and share your skills
  • Full training will be given

Key Tasks

  • Supporting the promotion of Try IT in the community
  • Helping to organise and deliver library based IT sessions for customers who have little or no experience of using a computer
  • Using pre-designed training handouts as a basis for each session
  • Encouraging people to have a go at using a computer during national promotions such as Get Online Week and Silver Surfers Day

Local Studies Volunteer

Library Volunteers will extend and enhance the library services we provide. They will give support for everyday activities in the library, alongside NCC staff, to improve community access to the service.

A Local Studies volunteer must be prepared to commit to a regular time – a three or four hour session a week or fortnight. Our commitment is to offer training and regular support and the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.

Key Tasks

  • Assisting with ongoing Local Studies projects eg cutting and indexing local newspapers, filing ephemera, and stock work.
  • Supporting and assisting at Local Studies events
  • Helping with local studies displays in the library
  • Helping to record local community history
  • Preparing photographs for digitisation

Children's Activity Volunteer

Library Volunteers extend and enhance the library services Nottinghamshire provides. They give support for everyday activities in the library, alongside NCC staff, to improve community access to the service.

A Children's Activity volunteer must be prepared to commit time, energy and enthusiasm to the role. Our commitment is to offer training and regular support and the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.

Key Tasks

  • Help to meet and greet members of the public at children's events, promote library services, take tickets, answer queries and give directions.
  • Help with preparing the space in which the activity is taking place, and clearing up after events.
  • Supporting the Library Staff to assist with the smooth running of craft activities and events.
  • Supervising groups of children and young people during activities
  • Supporting children and young people throughout the event

Key Skills

  • Energetic, positive attitude along with a courteous, calm approach to the public and enjoy dealing with people, especially children.
  • Happy to work as part of a team and cooperate with staff members
  • Confident and patient with children and young people
  • Supportive of the library in its commitment to making resources and events accessible and welcoming.

This is not always a physically active role, but will require the lifting and moving of library furniture at times.
