Registers of non-Anglican denominations
Nottinghamshire Archives holds many registers of non-Anglican denominations. The collections consist mainly of the records of Protestant churches other than the Church of England.
The finding list includes registers (mainly original) for the following denominations:
- Baptist (NC BP)
- Independent (NC IR)
- Methodist (NC MR)
- Various Non-conformist (NC NR)
- Roman Catholic (NC RC)
- Quaker (NC Q)
The list is divided alphabetically and should be searched under place name.
The lists are available in PDF format. Please note that none of the files are larger than 125KB.
See the copyright notice.
How to find the information you want
The name of each place worship is followed by the Nottinghamshire Archives reference number of archive group e.g. (NC MR 8) to which the registers belong. To find the actual reference to an individual register you will need to look through the archive catalogues available in the search room.
Registers can then be ordered through the normal document production system.
In a few cases, microfiche copies of the registers are available. These are marked (F) instead of the reference number.
Details of marriages or burials
Very few non-conformist places of worship had burial grounds and many were not licensed to perform marriages. This is why so few burial and marriage registers are listed.
Check the Anglican parish registers, civil cemetery records or the General Register Office (GRO) Index for the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths (from July 1837 onwards) for more information.
The University of Nottingham's Manuscripts and Special Collections also holds some non-conformist material and associated regional denominational organisations and committees. For more information on their holdings, including details of registers, please visit their website: www.nottingham.ac.uk/manuscriptsandspecialcollections/collectionsindepth/non-conformistchurches/introduction.aspx.
Quaker registers
Separate entries for area "meetings" have not been entered individually. There is an index to Quaker births, marriages and deaths which covers Nottinghamshire (and also Derbyshire) For the Quaker indexes, therefore, see "Nottinghamshire" in the finding list.
