This photograph is part of the Nottingham City Engineers Collection. Taken on 26 September 1956, it shows a view which, apart from the bridge over the Nottingham Canal, has changed completely. In the foreground at No. 31 Wilford Street is Cyril Harrison's Newsagents and next door at No. 33 the Tobacconists run by Miss Ada Hollingworth. Both shops would have been busy with workers calling in on their way to factories in The Meadows and, going the other way, towards Castle Boulevard, Radford and the Raleigh factory.

Looking over the bridge can be seen the large Grain Warehouse and beyond that one of the many Railway Goods Sheds which stood on this area of railway sidings and warehouses, now occupied by the Nottingham Magistrates buildings. Nottinghamshire Archives, to the right of the Magistrates, are currently being extended, making further changes to an area that has been transformed in the last 60 years.

On the bridge, the poster for the Nottingham Odeon shows that the 1952 Walt Disney film Robin Hood was on that week starring Richard Todd in the
title role and Joan Rice, born in Derby and educated in Nottingham, as Maid Marian.
