Collections and catalogues

Nottinghamshire Archives holds more than 4 million documents.

Documents are grouped together according to the person or organisation that created them. A group of documents is called a collection.

So that depositors, archives staff and researchers know what is held at the Archives, we compile lists or catalogues of the documents in each collection.

Each collection of documents held at Nottinghamshire Archives is grouped together into one of 20 archive groups.

Nottinghamshire Archives regularly receives new acquisitions of material throughout the year.

Online catalogue

A selection of our catalogues can now be searched online. To find out more and to start searching visit the Nottinghamshire Archives Worldwide website: nawcat.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/.

Only a small selection of our holdings are listed on the site. Find out which records are currently available in the online catalogue. Please note: no images of records appear in the catalogue.

If you find a description in which you are interested, you can access the record in the following ways:

A number of our catalogues are also available on the Access to Archives website: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a. These catalogues are not yet available on the Nottinghamshire Archives Worldwide catalogue. If you find a description on the Access to Archives web site, you can access the record in the ways described above.

Lists of our catalogued collections are available in our public search room.

Finding aids

Finding aids are available for different types of records. These provide overviews of what we hold for a particular type of document.

• Parish registers: see which Anglican baptism, marriage and burial registers we hold
• Other denominational registers: find out about the registers of other churches
• Clubs and societies: explore the records of different societies in Nottinghamshire
• Manorial records: find out more including the Manorial Documents Register.

Reference library

The Reference library contains a wide range of printed books and other publications about Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
