28 July 2008
Keith Dobb, from the Nottinghamshire Care Association, informed members on safeguarding policies and proceedures in private sector care homes. The association represents the majority of independent care homes (those that are not run by local authorities) in the county. Members also heard from Rosamunde Willis-Read, Regional Manager for the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) on how they regulate, inspect and review all social care services in the public, private and voluntary sector. Members heard from Elaine Yardley, Director of Adult Services at Nottingham City Council about safeguarding arrangements at the City and the policies and procedures that have been developed. They also heard from Eddie Moorecroft, Vice Chair of the Learning Disability Partnership, about safeguarding from the perspective of the service user.

Members looked at how the council's partners in health and the police are responding to the Mental Health Act. They received presentations from the Nottinghamshire teaching Primary Care Trust and Nottinghamshire Police to find out if current safeguarding procedures are working and how they might be improved. Members of the select committee received scene setting presentations from Jon Wilson, Service Director, Mental Health and Learning Disability and Claire Bearder, Adult Protection Co-ordinator, informing members of current arrangements for safeguarding vulnerable adults in the county.
