Twinnings and friendships
Nottinghamshire’s twinning and friendship organisations
A twinning link is really a friendship agreement between two communities in different countries. The two communities organise activities and projects and develop an understanding of historical, cultural and lifestyle similarities and differences, involving a wide range of community members.
There are about 2,000 twinning links in the UK, half with France, and a quarter with Germany. The Local Government International Bureau is responsible for coordinating twinning activities in England and can provide advice on all aspects of twinning and at all stages. European Commission twinning grant
Finding the resources to support twinning activities is always an important issue for community groups and local authorities. The European Commission established a town twinning grant in 1989 to support exchange activities between European twinned towns. It aims to support activities that raise European awareness and connect people from different European countries. Towns in the 25 EU member states are eligible.
To find out more information and to download application forms, find the European Commission twinning grant information at: http://europa.eu.int/comm/towntwinning/index_en.html
The Commission lays down timetables for submitting applications. The deadline is now passed for any project starting between 1 October and 31 December 2005. For 2006 there will be four phases with deadlines in November 2005, and February, April and June 2006. The definition will be broadened to cover meetings that combine learning about the European Union with practical activities at the local level. The upper and lower limits will remain at €2000 and €20,000.
In September 2005 the European Union called for town twinning proposals for 2005 – 2006 for conferences, training seminars, information campaigns and public meetings. You can read more in:
