How is Council Tax calculated? - Nottingahmshire County Council
The amount of Council Tax you pay depends on the value of the house you live in. Every house has been put into one of eight bands, based on the value of the house at 1 April 1991.
The eight bands are A,B,C,D,E,F,G and H.
The cheapest houses are in band A, and the most expensive houses are in band H.
Over 60% of the houses in Nottinghamshire are in bands A and B. Your Council Tax bill states which band applies to your property.
The amount of tax you pay is related to your valuation band, e.g. a band H property pays 3 times more Council Tax than a Band A property.
There are some discounts and exemptions to paying Council Tax. This includes things like:
- a 25% reduction for people who live alone
- Council Tax Benefit for people on low incomes
- reduced Council Tax rates for people with certain disabilities
- some empty property can be exempt from Council Tax.
Your District Council is responsible for collecting Council Tax and applying the rules about discounts, benefits, and exemptions.
Contact your District Council for more information about how your Council Tax is calculated.
