The Lord-Lieutenant: Sir Andrew Buchanan
Sir Andrew Buchanan is the son of Sir Charles and Lady Buchanan of St. Anne’s Manor, Sutton Bonington. He was born in Scotland in 1937 and in 1945 moved to Nottinghamshire where his family have long connections.
His cousin Henry Mellish was a Magistrate and an original member of Nottinghamshire County Council and for many years Chairman of the Education Committee and his father Sir Charles was County Commissioner of Nottinghamshire Scouts and also a Magistrate.
Sir Andrew was at school at Eton, served his National Service with the Coldstream Guards, went to Trinity College, Cambridge where he read law, and to Wye College, University of London. He worked as a Chartered Surveyor with Smith Woolley & Co. and Strutt & Parker.
In 1966 Sir Andrew married Belinda and shortly after they moved to live and farm at Hodsock Priory, which the family have owned since 1765. They have four children and seven grandchildren. Sir Andrew’s family have a long record of service to the County and in this tradition he was High Sheriff in 1976, and much to his surprise was appointed Lord-Lieutenant and Keeper of the Rolls in 1991. He is President of East Midlands Reserve Forces & Cadets Association and is a Member of Southwell Cathedral Council, Chairman of The Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for Appointments, Member of Court of Nottingham University, Governor of Nottingham High School, President of Nottinghamshire Scouts Association and involved in various capacities in very numerous organisations and charities in the County. He was appointed Chairman of the Nottingham Roosevelt Memorial Travelling Scholarship in 2008.
