What is a renewal of vows ceremony?

A renewal of vows ceremony provides the opportunity for couples who have already contracted a marriage or civil partnership to celebrate and renew their vows in a unique and personal way. There are many reasons to consider holding such a ceremony:

  • a favourite time to renew vows is at the time of a special anniversary. Popular dates include Silver after 25 years, Ruby after 40 years and Golden after 50 years, but it can be any anniversary that is meaningful to you
  • some couples who have married or registered a civil partnership abroad decide to hold a renewal of vows ceremony in this country to share their celebrations with family and friends
  • sometimes, after a difficult period in a relationship, couples choose to celebrate their renewed commitment to each other.

What will the ceremony consist of?

A ceremony is composed of a number of elements which allow you to create something personal and very special:

  • introduction and welcome
  • mention of any children
  • readings of poetry or similar
  • choice of music
  • renewal of vows/making of promises
  • exchange of new rings or re-dedication of original rings
  • presentation of certificate
  • closing words

You do not have to include all of these elements in your ceremony, this is merely a suggested structure. You may also include a short religious reading if you wish.
