- furniture in let accommodation
Do you live in rented accommodation where the furniture is provided by your landlord?
If you signed your lease or rental agreement after 1st January 1997 your landlord must make sure that any upholstered furniture supplied to you in the accommodation complies with the most up-to- date fire safety standards.
Also, any upholstered furniture supplied to you after 1st January 1997 must comply with the standards, whether or not you were living there before 1st January.
What furniture is affected?
Basically any upholstered furniture, including three piece suites, mattresses, chair cushions, upholstered headboards and even upholstered garden furniture if it can be used in' the house. Curtains, carpets and bedding are not affected.
How will I know if my furniture is safe?
Most furniture which has been supplied new since 1988 complies with the regulations. Somewhere on the furniture there should be a permanent label which says that it complies with the 1988
regulations.
What should I do if I am worried?
Look for the label on your furniture. If you are still unsure contact your nearest Trading Standards Office (addresses below). We try to advise as many landlords and letting agents as we can find in Nottinghamshire. However we do not know where they all are and we are unable to identify furnished rented accommodation easily. Even if we know where the accommodation is we are unable to enter and inspect the furniture without the tenant's consent. We need to hear from you if you think your furniture does not comply.
