c) Neighbourhood Statistics

Following the early work of the Social Exclusion Unit which particularly focused upon the problems of deprived neighbourhoods, the recommendations of the various Policy Action Teams began to be implemented. Policy Action Team 18 on Better Information investigated how to collect, share and exploit socio-economic data, particularly for small areas and neighbourhoods.

One of the main recommendations of PAT 18 was the development of 'Neighbourhood Statistics' a new Internet based service designed to provide key local area data to help the delivery of the National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal. The Office of National Statistics has been leading on the development of this service which has now gone live and which provides some basic information on each ward in the UK. By searching on www.statistics.gov.uk/neighbourhood it is possible to find ward details via maps, postcodes or local authority names by drilling down to the appropriate level. For each ward the site gives a selection of statistics alongside those for the appropriate local authority district. Each ward is also given a profile in which some narrative explanation of the nature of the area is given alongside some district comparators.

The Neighbourhood Statistics work is developing and more services including crime statistics are promised in the near future.
