Kirkby Transport Study

In 2004 Nottinghamshire County Council began a transport study in Kirkby in Ashfield.  We asked for your views on transport issues in and around the town.

Questionnaires were sent to stakeholders, businesses and households. A public exhibition was held in a number of locations including: a mobile exhibition unit on the Lowmoor Rd pedestrianised area, the Festival Hall, Ashfield District Council's offices and the Accacia Avenue Community centre in Annesley Woodhouse.

From the consultation a wide range of issues were highlighted the main ones being listed below:

Traffic congestion

  • Kingsway / Station Street junction traffic lights and one way system causing congestion on Station Street.
  • Traffic held up in the town centre up by buses parked on Station Street.

Cycling

  • More provision of marked cycle ways and cycle lockers throughout Kirkby and the Woodhouses.

Pedestrian routes

  • Clear pedestrian signing provided to advise people of routes to key facilities.
  • Better footpath provision in the area.

After analysing the information from the consultation the following schemes have been developed to address the issues:

Traffic congestion

  • Installation of a right green filter for traffic turning out of Diamond Avenue south onto Derby Road (A611).
  • SCOOT traffic light optimisation system on four town centre junctions
  • Box junctions at Mutton Hill junction and at Stirling roundabout. (feasibility)
  • Signage amendments at the A38 / B6018 Sutton Road junction, with a view to removing it if it seems to be increasing the number of ‘lost’ HGVs. (long term)
  • Construction of a combined, longer bus stop at the Nags Head junction to reduce the effect of buses queueing adjacent to the junction.

Buses

  • Upgraded bus stops on Coxmoor Estate in line with Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) standards for Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliance.

Cycling

  • Provision of a shared off-road pedestrian and cycle path on Diamond Avenue from Nags Head Junction towards Derby Road (A611)

Pedestrian routes

  • Provision of a footway on Lowmoor Road between Byron Avenue bus stop and Sutton Parkway station.
  • Improved signage and information for pedestrians moving between the town centre and the rail station.
  • Pedestrian railings at the Annesley badger box junction. (feasibility)

Consultation on the Kirkby in Ashfield transport study is now closed, but work is still ongoing to deliver many of the schemes that were identified as part of the study. Officers from the County Council are also involved in the Kirkby master planning exercise which may highlight longer term transport schemes.
