Carlton, Netherfield and Gedling Village Transport Study
Better travel and transport in Carlton and Netherfield
Carlton and Netherfield town centres have a vital role in providing important goods and services. We would like to help these centres thrive by ensuring that all members of the community are able to access them. At the same time we want to manage congestion, reduce road accidents and improve air quality.
As part of our Local Transport Plan we’re looking at ways to give people more travel choice. In other words we’re looking at how we can help make walking, cycling and travel by bus safer, easier and quicker to help take the pressure off our roads.
Our transport study is about finding out what your transport issues are. It might be a need for more pedestrian crossings, better access for those with disabilities or more cycle parking. Although the study is focussed mainly on Carlton and Netherfield, we are considering suggestions for improving access to Gedling Village centre as well.
Consultation Feedback
What we did
In February 2009 the county council began a large-scale consultation about transport issues in the Carlton, Netherfield and Gedling village areas. A total of 19,500 questionnaires were sent out to all households in the area. It was also made available on County Council web page. The council also wrote to over 60 local groups and stakeholders, and carried out a focus group for each of the three areas.
What we found
We received 2,025 responses (a 10 percent response rate). Most people (88 percent) supported our aim of improving walking, cycling and public transport facilities in the area.
We also received 1,869 specific comments or requests. We have recorded and considered every one of them. The majority were about traffic or public transport issues, with comments about pedestrian issues coming a close second.
The single most common request was for extended bus routes (8.9 percent of total responses) followed by the enforcement of Traffic Regulation Orders and parking on pavements (6 percent of total responses).

What we will do next
Based on what you told us during the consultation, the county council has committed to carrying out a number of key actions including:
- Work with the Bus Operators to relieve congestion caused by waiting buses in Netherfield
- Spend an additional £100,000 on improving pavements in Carlton, Netherfield and Gedling Village
- Improve pedestrian crossing facilities. The County Council will investigate the feasibility of providing new pedestrian crossing facilities at the following locations:
Victoria Retail Park, Netherfield
Wright Street, Netherfield
Burton Road between Carlton Square and Manor Road, Carlton
Station Road, Carlton near the Post Office
Southdale Road/Carlton Hill junction
Westdale Lane, Carlton near Haddon Primary School
Vale Road, Colwick near St John the Baptist Primary School
Victoria Road, Netherfield.
- Work to improve the existing bus stops by, wherever possible, installing or improving bus shelters including better information and electronic timetable displays
- Review the operation of the Southdale Road/Carlton Hill junction
- Review the operation of the Carlton Square junction

When are we going to do this?
The first projects will be completed early in 2010 including some footpath improvements and a number of pedestrian crossings. The remaining work, subject to feasibility and funding, will take place in the next couple of years.
