Retford Square, in the North of Nottinghamshire, is surrounded by many notable historic buildings and contains the market and other seasonal events. Extending from the Square are Market Place and Grove Street, bringing vehicles into the core of Retford.

Aspects of the environmental improvements carried out in the last century are both dated and in a poor state of repair.  Improvements to the Square are required to give Retford a public realm which reflects the quality of the built heritage of the town.

Proposed environmental improvements follow existing policies, strategies and guidance; taking into consideration - historical context, land use, access and circulation, and landscape and visual impact. Proposals feature the following key elements:

  • A simple classical design to complement the surrounding architectural features
  • A pedestrian friendly design that decreases the dominance of vehicular traffic
  • A space allowing for daily use as well as the thrice weekly market
  • Enhancement of the war memorial as a focal point

The proposed design considers surface materials, street furniture, trees, community art, lighting, pavement cafes, and the arrangement of the square and market place as well as the Chancery Lane approach, The Bridgegate Centre, and The Town Hall Yard. The following is an artist’s impression of the proposed design.
