Beacon status

In 2002 we received Beacon status in Better Access and Mobility from the Government for our innovative work in transportation.  This prestigious award recognises good practice by local authorities delivering the very best public services.

This award reflects our innovative and groundbreaking work with Bus Quality Partnerships, travel plans (including STEPS, our own travel plan), mobility management action areas and the success of large public transport infrastructure projects, such as the Robin Hood railway line and Nottingham Express Transit (tram service).

As a showcase council, we’re committed to promoting and sharing good practice on transport and mobility issues to other councils.

The Beacon award is in good company.  Our Local Transport Plan, a five year strategic plan for transport in Nottinghamshire, has also secured a "Centre of Excellence" award and was rated at the highest status - well above average - by the Government.

Robin Hood line

The Robin Hood line project is the largest of its kind to be built and funded by Local Authority sponsors outside the Metropolitan areas, and addresses key issues such as social exclusion and transport integration.  The very successful re-opening of this Nottingham - Mansfield - Worksop railway was achieved through a partnership approach led by Nottinghamshire County Council and involving many other public, private, local and national bodies.

Bus Quality Partnership (BQP)

We were one of the first local authorities in the UK to establish a Bus Quality Partnership (BQP).  These BQPs are now well established throughout Nottinghamshire and have achieved significant increases in patronage on these routes, typically 10%.  BQPs often include the 'NextBus' system, pioneering work on real-time information, and extends to include close partnership working on predominately leisure routes, such as the 'Sherwood Forester'.

Mobility Management Action Areas (MMAAs)

A programme of Mobility Management Action Areas (MMAAs) is integral to both of Nottinghamshire's Local Transport Plans.  They represent a fresh approach to developing transport policies and schemes for Nottinghamshire’s towns and district centres.  The needs of the individual traveller, rather than solely the transport network, are seen as the central focus.  The first MMAA commenced in Worksop in 1998 and the programme is being successfully rolled out throughout the county.
