Greater Nottingham Accessibility Strategy
North Nottinghamshire Accessibility Strategy
Beacon award for improving accessibility
What are Accessibility Strategies?
Accessibility planning is a way of working with other organisations to find and solve local accessibility problems, checking whether people can reach the services they need, such as employment, education, healthcare, food shopping and leisure facilities, and identifying action to take if they cannot. The development of this work is set out in two Accessibility Strategies.
Accessibility Strategies were an integral part of the second round of Local Transport Plans covering the period 2006/07 to 2010/11. As part of the third round of Local Transport Plans, covering the period 2011/12 to 2025/26 the Accessibility Strategies will be updated.
Greater Nottingham Accessibility Strategy
The Greater Nottingham Accessibility Strategy was jointly developed by Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council and covers Nottingham City and the boroughs of Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe together with Hucknall (situated within the Ashfield district).

Beacon award
In 2008/2009 we were awarded Beacon status for improving accessibility, jointly with Nottingham City Council, building upon our previous Beacon status in Better Access and Mobility received in 2002.
The award recognised our consultation processes like Local Accessibility Transport Studies, our partnership working on schemes which contribute positively to the local area including Wheels to Work and the Shopping Scheme, as well as our strong track record of developing and implementing major public transport projects such as Robin Hood Airport Lynx, Retford Bus Station and the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) tram service.
As Beacon authorities for improving accessibility we are committed to promoting and sharing good practice about accessibility planning. We held a series of events in spring 2009 to showcase the strongest elements of our work. A range of speakers gave their time to support the events and the presentations covered topics from ways to encourage greener travel to transport planning.
For more information about our Beacon status, the work we have done to further access to jobs, learning, healthy lifestyles, food, essential services and leisure in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and to download pdfs of our case studies, visit www.thebigwheel.org.uk/beacon/index.html or contact us.
