Pleasley Bypass Extension

Background
Nottinghamshire County Council has recently constructed the Mansfield Ashfield Regeneration Route and is considering extending these highway improvements in Pleasley. The County Council is currently developing its next Local Transport Plan for North Notts for the period 2006 to 2011 and is considering a number of major transport schemes for possible inclusion. This study will investigate and consult on a range of scheme options in Pleasley. This will enable a decision to be taken as to whether a scheme for Pleasley should progress further.

The need for the scheme:
The A617 Chesterfield Road is a busy and important route into and out of Mansfield providing a strategic transport link to the M1 Junction 29. The road currently carries over 20,000 vehicles per day through Pleasley Hill and this number is likely to increase. This volume of traffic results in unpleasant conditions for local residents. Economic regeneration of the former north Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire coalfield area is a priority in the region and improvements to provide better access should assist in this process.

The options:
Several options have been carefully considered with respect to likely impacts on the environment, traffic flows, safety and cost. After evaluation of all options, the following proposals have been chosen for public consultation.
- A new single carriageway bypass (see location plan)
- A new dual carriageway bypass (see location plan)
- Significant improvements to the existing A617 (including realignment of the bend opposite Poplar Drive.)
- Minor improvements to the existing highway infrastructure.
