Road safety riding tips

  • Always look behind every time before you start off, make a turning, overtake or stop.  Always look over your right shoulder, and remember – that look behind could save your life.

  • Always start off with your left foot on the ground (on the kerb if there is one) and your right foot on the pedal.  Get into this position every time you stop, so that you are ready to start again.

  • When braking, use both brakes, but pull the back brake first, quickly followed by the front, so that you don’t go over the handlebars.

  • Give clear signals to other road users so that people know what you are going to do.  Don’t stop or pull out suddenly, as there could be traffic right behind you.

  • Remember that other traffic has to share the road with you – ride in single file whenever possible, and never more than two abreast.  Also, keep your distance from traffic in front, as you never know when you might have to brake sharply.

  • Always plan your route before you set off. Consider where you are going and what junctions and road features you need to negotiate. Do not be afraid to avoid complex road junctions if you are not confident or experienced. The best route for you may not always be the shortest route.
