Although it’s vital to make sure that your bike is in good working order, it’s just as important that you’re ready to ride. Here are some tips to make sure that you are doing things right.

  • Always wear a cycle helmet – head injury is the main cause of disability and death resulting from cycle accidents, and a helmet will help to protect your head from serious injury.

  • Remember a cycle helmet will not prevent accidents - you still need to take care.  Ride safely and responsibly at all times.

  • Make sure you wear fluorescent or bright clothing in the daylight, so that you can be easily seen.  At night, you need to wear something reflective.  Never go out at night in dark clothes!

  • Choose sensible clothes for cycling – long skirts, loose trousers or shoelaces can catch in the wheel or chain, and shoes like flip-flops or wellington boots do not grip the pedals or give you enough control.

  • If you have to carry anything while riding your bike, always use panniers or a rucksack – never carry anything on your handlebars.
