Before undertaking a journey or riding your bike you should check that it is appropriate and safe for the activity.

There is a Basic 5 point Check that covers the most important points on a bike to look at. The 5 points are:

Brakes – Check that the blocks are not too worn and are making good contact with the wheel rims. The brake cables should be in good condition and not frayed.  To check they are working correctly, apply each brake individually and ensure the bike does not move.

Tyres/Wheels – Check that the tyres are well pumped up. The tyres should not be too worn and there should be no cracks in the tyre surface.

Handlebars – Ensure that they do not move independently of the wheel by holding the wheel between your legs and turning the handlebars. The handlebar post should not be pulled up beyond the safety mark.

Chain – The chain should be well oiled, not rusty and not too slack.

Size of bike – Ideally you should be able to sit on your bike and touch the ground with the balls of your feet. The seat post itself should not be pulled up beyond the safety mark.

In addition you should ensure that your bike is equipped with a red reflector at the rear.  It is also recommended that a white front reflector is also fitted.

Lights must be used when riding at night or in poor visibility.
