EDF Energy – Prior Notice of Significant Road Ddisruption in North Nottinghamshire
Due to the construction of a new power generation plant at Staythorpe motorists are being advised that there will be a significant number of equipment movements throughout North and Eastern Nottinghamshire over the next few months.
The equipment movements can be divided into two types:
- Overnight convoyed movements
- Generators and turbines
Overnight convoyed movements
These will happen on the following routes and dates: A1 (southband) A1 A617 into Staythorpe Power station.
These loads will be up to a weight of 270 tonnes and will travel over the following nights in convoys of two vehicles: Monday 08/09/08 Thursday 11/09/08 Monday 15/09/08 Thursday 18/09/08 Wednesday 24/09/08.
Police will escort these loads throughout Nottinghamshire and will be expects to be entering the county at around 7pm.
The anticipated speed will be up to 20mph and are expected to cause the most disruption whilst travelling the A617. It is anticipated that the time of completion of these movements will be approximately midnight on each night.
Generators and turbines
These will consist of loads of up to 571 tonnes and will be travelling from Cottam Power Station onto the A57 – along to the A1 onto the A614 / A616 / local roads to the A617 Kelham and then A617 to Staythorpe Power Station.
The above loads will be travelling at no faster than walking speed and will cause very significant disruption along the whole route.
On each occasion the police will escort them and the estimated time of commencement on the first day (these loads will take two days to complete the journey) will be 8am at Cottam.
On the second day the loads will commence the final part of the journey at 4pm and will travel through to Staythorpe.
All loads will run on the following weekends: 20 / 21-09-2008 27 / 28-09-2008 04 / 05-10-2008 08 / 09-11-2008 15 / 16-11-2008 06 / 07-12-2008 13 / 14-12-2008 03 / 04-01-2009 17 / 18-01-2009 24 / 25-01-2009 07 / 08-03-2009 14 / 15-03-2009
It is expected that throughout the whole route there will be significant traffic disruption whilst each load is moving – the loads will not, however, move on each Sunday before 4pm.

Myrtle Street, Retford To allow Anglian Water to carry out a water mains installation Myrtle Street in Retford will be closed. The closure is from its junction with Westfield Road for a distance of 10 m in a westerly direction. The closure will commence at 06:00 hours on Monday 8 September 2008 and finish by 23:59 hours Friday 26 September 2008. The alternative route Westfield Road – Queen Street – A620, Babworth Road – Babworth Road – Myrtle Street and Vice Versa.
A161, Beckingham Road, Walkeringham While Nottinghamshire County Council carry out refurbishment works on a culvert the A161, Beckingham Road, Walkeringham will be closed from a point 615 metres South of its junction with Gringley Road in a Southerly direction for a distance of 50 metres. The closure will begin at 06:00 hours Monday the 8 September 2008 and finish by 23:59 hours Sunday the 2 November 2008. The alternative route is via: A161 – A631 – B1403 – Fountain Hill Road – North Moor Road – Mill Bulk Road – A161 and vice versa.
Newark
Mill Gate, Newark While Severn Trent carry out a Pollution Control Project Mill Gate in Newark will be closed from its junction with Mill Lane to its junction with Pelham Street. The closure will begin at 08:00 hours and finish by 16:30 hours on Friday 26th September 2008. The alternative route will be via B6166, Victoria Street and Pelham Street.
Ossington Road, Sutton on Trent and Sutton Road, Ossington While Nottinghamshire County Council carry out carriageway patching works both Ossington Road, Sutton on Trent and Sutton Road, Ossington will be closed. Ossington Road will be closed from its junction with the B1164 to its junction with Sutton Road, Ossington. Sutton Road will be closed from its junction with Ossington Road, Sutton on Trent to its junction with C13 Carlton Road, Carlton on Trent. The closures will commence at 07:30 hours Monday 29 September 2008 and finish by Tuesday 7 October 2008. The alternative route is via B1164, Great North Road, Sutton on Trent – B1164, Ossington Road, Carlton on Trent – C13, Carlton on Trent and vice versa.
Newark Castle Level Crossing, B6326, Great North Road, Newark While Network Rail carryout essential track work Newark Castle level crossing on the B6326, Great North Road in Newark will be closed. The closure will commence at 22:10 hours Saturday 13 September 2008 and it will re-open at 12:25 hours Sunday 14 September 2008. The alternative route will be via: B6336, Great North Road – A46 – B6166, Lincoln Road – B6166, North Gate – B6166, Bar Gate – B6326, Beast Market Hill and vice versa.
Stephen Road, Newark Nottinghamshire County Council are carrying out resurfacing works on Stephen Road in Newark. This will involve closing the road in phases as the work progresses along the road. The closure will begin at 07:30 hours on Monday 27 October 2008 and finish by 19:00 hours Saturday 1 November 2008. There will be a second period of closure beginning at 07:30 hours Monday 8 December 2008 and finishing by 19 December 2008. An alternative route will be signed on site.
Grove Street, Balderton To allow Severn Trent to carry out sewer works Grove Street in Balderton will be closed from a point 70 metres east of Linden Avenue in an easterly distance for 25 metres. The closure will begin at 09:00 hours Monday 1 December 2008 and finish by 16:00 hours Saturday 13 December 2008. The alternative route is via B6326, London Road – Rowan Way and vice versa.

Road safety and travel awareness
Following the move to Bevercotes House at Sherwood Energy Village, Ollerton, the road safety teams from Bassetlaw, Newark and Mansfield / Ashfield are now working together as one team for the north of the county. During the summer holidays the team is busy settling into the new office and devising new work programmes, and are looking forward to working in the extended area when the new school year begins in September.
Vacancies - School Crossing Patrols and Casual Road Safety Trainers
There are currently vacancies for permanent patrols throughout the north of the county and also vacancies for relief patrols throughout the areas. We are also looking for people to deliver our cycle training programme, currently to Year 5 and 6 children in schools. Peter Thom will vacate his full time post as Technical Service Manager (highways North) at the end of September. Gordon Albery will now oversee Mansfield and Bassetlaw areas whilst Jo Horton will manage the Ashfield and Newark areas.
