Road Safety

School Travel Plans

School Travel Plans aim to reduce congestion, encourage walking and cycling and improve road safety in the vicinity of schools. Individual schools address the problems identified by their own school community with the support of the School Travel Plan team.

The STP team held an innovations showcase event at County Hall, West Bridgford on 19 May 2009 to celebrate 10 years of School Travel Plans within Nottinghamshire.  Schools across the county were invited to the event which included interactive road safety educational resources, demonstration of best practice and displays of award winning innovative travel plan schemes.  Eighteen awards were distributed to schools who have maintained their travel plans using innovative ideas.  The Chairman of the County Council the Hon Joan Taylor presented the awards.  The STP Team launched their new initiative 'Travel Trumps' at the event – a set of cards that children collect as they travel sustainably to and from school.  The scheme will start at schools in September 2009.

Road Safety Education

The area road safety quiz finals took place in June, the south area final ended in a tie with the joint winners being Bramcote Hills Primary and Round hill Primary.

The nine highest scoring schools of the preliminary road safety quiz rounds went through to the South Area Road Safety Quiz Final which was held at the Albert Hall on 17 June 2009.  The schools who participated were:

  • Bispham Drive Junior(Broxtowe Area)
  • Bramcote Hills Primary
  • Round Hill Primary
  • Burton Joyce Primary (Gedling Area)
  • Mapperley Plains Primary
  • St Wilfrids C of E Primary
  • Grosvenor School (Rushcliffe Area)
  • Normanton on Soar Primary

Many schools are holding cycle training courses with Year 5 and 6 children. Part of this training takes place on the road to encourage children to use their bikes as a means of transport, as well as for leisure, as they grow up.
