Road Safety

School Travel Plans

School Travel Plans (STP) aim to reduce congestion, encourage walking and cycling and improve road safety in the vicinity of schools. Individual schools address the problems identified by their own school community with the support of the School Travel Plan team.

Road Safety Education

Road safety staff are currently visiting primary schools for the preliminary round of the Junior Road Safety Quiz. All Key Stage 2 children (age 7-11) will answer multiple choice questions from a Power Point presentation regarding safe behaviour as pedestrians, passengers and cyclists.  Pupils have been issued with a worksheet 'X Factor' which has been developed by the Road Safety Team.

Many schools are holding cycle training courses with Year 5 and 6 children. Part of this training takes place on the road to encourage children to use their bikes as a means of transport, as well as for leisure, as they grow up.

Road Safety staff attended a 999 Challenge event during the half term break at West Bridgford Fire Station working with Police, Highways Agency, Fire Service and St John Ambulance.  Approximately 60 transition students took part in several workshops which had cycling and road safety themes. Road Safety Education continues to be delivered to schools throughout the County. The road safety team have developed a variety of interactive projects aimed at KS3/4 students. The resources aim to improve awareness of the hazards people may face on the roads as pedestrians, cyclists, drivers or car passengers.

A visit by the road safety team to carry out these projects can be arranged by schools with the road safety office on 0115 9774373.

School Crossing Patrols

There are currently vacancies for permanent patrols and relief patrols throughout Broxtowe, Gedling & Rushcliffe.  If you, or anyone you know, are aged  over 18 and would like to join our team of patrols carrying out a vital role in assisting the safety of schoolchildren, please contact the Road Safety Office on 0115 9774373.

Highway schemes

Bingham Cycling Quiet Routes & Toucan Crossing – A number of local cycle routes in Bingham are being implemented by April 2010. These mostly consist of only direction signing for cyclists using quiet residential roads.  However, a light controlled toucan crossing (for pedestrians and cyclists) has been built on Nottingham Road at its junction with Garden Road.  Also, a footpath link near School Lane has been widened and converted to shared pedestrian/cyclist use.  These works are complete except for minor snagging works.

Barnstone Rd/Musters Rd Crossroads, Langar – The Give Way signing at this junction is to be improved with the addition of offside Give Signs on both side roads following a complaint.  The works should be undertaken before April 2010.

Manor Lane, Shelford – ‘Road liable to flooding’ signs are to be erected in both directions on this road following safety concerns.  Alternative solutions to the drainage problem were sought, but not identified due to the necessary flood defences on either side of the road. These works are now complete.

Rempstone Road, East Leake – Road markings including rumble strips are being installed to improve safety following accidents at the Loughborough Road crossroads.  Consultation has been completed with no objections being received. Works should take place imminently.

Church Street/Market Place, Bingham – Improvements have been designed to rationalise bus movements around Bingham Town Centre. Two bus stands are proposed and the existing bus stop is to be repositioned slightly. It is intended that buses will queue in the bus stands and then move forward to the bus stop only once ready to pick up passengers.  Consultation is ongoing until 12/3/10.
