Seasonal decorations - including Christmas and other decorations

Our policy for seasonal decorations was agreed by the Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability on 20 April 2006 and has significant implications on the application process. Seasonal decorations are generally considered to be high risk, with overhead decorations and electrical equipment. Compliance with the  policy will therefore help safeguard the interests of the Applicant (Promoter), the Authority and the general public.

All applications to install seasonal decorations in and above the Highway or linked to the Highway (i.e. by an electrical connection), must now be submitted on a Seasonal Decoration Application Form [WORD 99KB] This application form has been generated in response to the ‘Code of Practice for the Installation, Operation and Removal of Seasonal Decorations’ published by the Institution of Lighting Engineers. A copy of this Code will be required by Promoters for reference to complete an application. In addition to the requirements of the Code of Practice for seasonal decorations, contractors/installers of decorations must also carry out their work in accordance with our own Code of Practice for Traffic Management at Roadworks [PDF 3.1MB]

To help promoters complete the new application form an Application Form Guidance Note [PDF 35KB] has been written.

All applications must be submitted a minimum of 12 weeks prior to the proposed installation date. If an application is approved, a Highways Act Section 178 Licence Consent [PDF 605KB] will be issued by Nottinghamshire County Council to the promoter for a maximum period of three months. New applications must be submitted for each subsequent period, for example each year for Christmas decorations.
