The new bus station for Retford opened on Monday 30 July 2007 following a nine month construction period. The station cost £1.4m to construct and offers a huge improvement for passengers compared to the previous layout.
Retford Bus Station has been highly commended for its modern and comfortable design, which has boosted passengers' safety and acted as a catalyst for growth and change in the town centre.
Nottinghamshire County Council received the commendation at the UK Bus Awards - which aims to raise the profile of the bus industry - at the company's annual awards ceremony held in November.
The judges were impressed with how the new bus station has been a catalyst for growth and change. They were also impressed with the County Council's partnership working with local retailers to put in new footways and landscaped areas on Spa Lane.
Nottinghamshire County Councillor Stella Smedley, former Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: "It is an honour to receive this recognition at a national awards ceremony. Trends have shown that over the last three years there has been a steady rise in the number of people using Retford's bus services.
Former County Councillor Chris Baron, added: "The station is not only visually striking but environmentally friendly too. An eco-friendly design was essential during the construction of Retford Bus Station as we were committed to providing an environmentally friendly and sustainable service to the people of Nottinghamshire. Hopefully as passenger numbers continue to increase, so will extra services as Retford Bus Station has been designed with spare capacity. This is integral to the County Council's Accessibility Planning Strategy for which it has been awarded beacon status."

Window of Opportunity at Retford’s new bus station
Artist Julian Stocks was commissioned by the County Council to work up a distinct design for the feature window that sits above the main entrance to Retford’s new bus station.
To seek inspiration for the designs, Julian met with members of the Retford Society, pupils and staff at Retford Oaks High School, members of the Lawn View Day Centre and a group of reporters from the Retford Times. A watery theme soon developed for the artwork due to the strong presence of both the Chesterfield Canal and the River Idle which cross each other near the town centre. Members of the groups also suggested images and text to be included in the designs. Staff and pupils were on hand to inspect their work on the open day in July 2006.
