Mansfield public transport interchange scheme
A new bus interchange is proposed to be constructed in the heart of Mansfield. This will replace the old out-dated bus station situated off Rosemary Street that opened in 1977. A proposed layout of the site [PDF 545KB] is available to download. There are numerous problems with the existing bus station [PDF 228KB] which the new scheme will seek to resolve.

The project is being led by the County Council with Mansfield District Council working in partnership. The £10m scheme to provide a first class interchange for Mansfield is to be funded by contributions from the Department for Transport, Nottinghamshire County Council, Mansfield District Council and EMDA.

The scheme will offer a major improvement to the quality of the bus waiting environment benefiting the existing five million passenger trips using the current bus station and hopefully encouraging more people to travel by public transport.
The new station will be fully enclosed and will boast a comfortable waiting area with plenty of seating, toilets, shop, café and baby changing area.
It will also include a staffed travel information office, CCTV cameras linked to the town centre system and automatic doors separating the waiting passengers from buses.
Site Location
The new bus station is proposed to be relocated to the Station Road public car park, off Quaker Way, just 180 metres (195 yards) from the Market Square and within the heart of the town centre. It will be much closer to the train station with one of the proposals being a pedestrian bridge linking the train station to the bus station making interchange between the two much easier.
When the exisiting bus station does move there are also plans to redevelop this area which will help the overall regeneration of the town.

Public Consultation
There has been a high level of public and stakeholder interest on the proposals and the scheme has been refined taking into account feedback received.
Exhibitions were held during December 2006 in Mansfield Market Place, Mansfield Town Hall, local libraries including Mansfield, Ladybrook, Forest Town and Warsop and the Coop foodstore in Mansfield Woodhouse.
Over 304 questionnaire and 60 postcard responses were received to the consultation.
- 95 percent of respondents felt that Mansfield needed a better bus station
- 66 percent stated that they would use buses more if a new bus station was provided
- 78 percent of respondents felt the proposed location was either 'very good' or 'good'
- 85 percent of respondents rated the scheme as being either 'very good' or 'good'
- Only a small percentage of respondents disliked the design (2 percent) and location (9 percent).
Programme
- December 07 - February 08 - Seek planning approval. Further information regarding the planning application can be viewed here
- 2009 - Start of main construction works
- Summer 2010. - Bus interchange opens. Bus services transfer from the old bus station.
Bus operators are obviously a key part of the scheme. Regular meetings have been held with the two main operators Stagecoach and Trent Barton and both have written in (July 2005) confirming their support for the scheme. In addition to this, a full scale layout of the site has been trialed at Newark Showground (on two occasions) and the design has been altered based on this testing.
