Nottinghamshire is a large and diverse county, which presents both opportunities and challenges for providing services to children and families. We aim to achieve consistency and equity in service delivery, whilst responding to local needs within diverse communities. Some of the key features of our current success are:

  • a clear focus on family support and achieving permanence for children who cannot live with their birth families
  • a strong service user focus in all aspects of service delivery
  • strong partnerships with other agencies and with the voluntary/independent sector
  • clear leadership
  • an established approach to quality assurance
  • a robust approach to supervision and training.

The judgement of both our Joint Review in 2002 and the recent SSI inspection of our Children’s Services is that we are “serving most children well” with “promising prospects” of improvement.

We are confident that our prospects are better than promising – a view reinforced by the SSI judgement of our audit of child protection services following the Laming Report. This received the highest rating in the region, with prospects for improvement judged as “excellent”.
