The interview itself

Expect a test

We use different types of tests for most of our jobs. For example, if you are being interviewed for a finance or admin role, you should expect a numeracy test or some kind of written exercise, whereas if you are being interviewed for a management or specialist role, you might be asked to prepare a presentation.

Currently, we only use psychometric tests for roles in Children's Residential Services and we do not use any form of personality testing.

Panel interviews

Our primary method of selection is a panel interview. During these interviews, you will be asked questions by a minimum of two people; there are often more members of the panel for more senior roles.

Interview tips

Listen to the questions you are being asked. You may have prepared thoroughly, but you may not have expected the question to be phrased in the way that the panel member phrases it.

  • If you are giving a presentation, be sure to talk to the interview panel, don't just read out your notes or hide behind overhead projections.

After the interview

Although the outcome of the interview may disappoint you, always ask for feedback from the panel; the feedback will help you to improve your interview technique and you should aim to learn something new from each interview you attend. Practice makes perfect.
