Filling in an application form

When you apply for a job with us, the decision whether to invite you for interview will be based on the information you provide in the application form sent out to you.

It is most important that you complete all sections of the form as neatly, clearly and fully as possible. Please type or write in black ink to enable the form to be photocopied.

Before you fill in the form...

Read the advert, the job description and the employee specification carefully, this information will describe what is needed for the job; including:

  • skills
  • experience
  • knowledge
  • qualifications
  • personal attributes
  • attitudes.

Your application form must demonstrate that you meet these requirements.

Filling in the form

Most of the sections on the form are easy to complete, just follow the instructions on the form itself. There are however two sections to which you should pay special attention:

1. General



You must declare any criminal convictions and cautions which might for other purposes be "spent" under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1 1974 (exemption order 1975), as the Social Services Department is exempt from this.

Declaration of previous offence(s) will not automatically mean you cannot be appointed.

We require additional checks for some of our jobs, particularly those where you have direct contact with children and young people.

2. Details of relevant experiences and other information in support of your application.



This last section of the form is arguably the most important, in that it provides you with an opportunity to tell us of any skills and previous experience that you possess that you consider match the requirements listed in the Job Description and Employee Specification.

Subject to the other parts of the application form being completed satisfactorily, this is the section that will ultimately determine whether you are called for interview.

Some people find it useful to structure their response to this section around the headings from the Employee Specification, although it is important to remember that you must also address the points in the Job Description.

When you've filled in the form...

Please post it to the address shown on the letter you receive; you must allow enough time for it to reach us before the closing date.
