Employers Guide to The Disability Discrimination Act
The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
Did you know:
- the DDA now covers conditions such as dyslexia, HIV, cancer, multiple sclerosis and stress
- when making ‘reasonable adjustments’, consider the type and size of the business, the cost and practicality of making the adjustment, and the potential benefits to disabled customers and employees
- the employment regulations (2004) shift the ‘burden of proof’ from the disabled person to the employer; this means effectively that the onus is on the employer to demonstrate that they have not discriminated against a disabled person, rather than requiring the disabled person to prove that they have been discriminated against.
More information on the DDA is available at the Disability Rights Commission website at: www.drc.org.uk/employment
or the Department for Work and Pensions website at: www.dwp.gov.uk/employers/dda
