Telecare

What is telecare?

Telecare is a combination of technology and support that provides help in an emergency. It aims to help you feel more confident about living independently in your own home.

How does telecare work?

Sensors in your home are linked through your phone line to a 24 hour monitoring centre. If the sensors detect a danger to you, staff at the monitoring centre will immediately contact you. They will check on your well-being and take appropriate action such as contacting a friend or neighbour or calling the emergency services.

In an emergency you can also contact the staff yourself using a special pendant worn around your neck.

What sensors are available?

The standard sensors available are:

  • Carbon monoxide detector
  • Smoke detector
  • Flood detector (for bathrooms/kitchens)
  • Extreme temperature sensor
  • Emergency panic buttons and pull cords.

Who can get telecare?

We provide two telecare services.

Safe at Home telecare service

This is aimed at:

  • Older people aged 65 and over
  • Disabled people aged 18 or over

Staying Independent telecare service

This is only available to people who have had a community care assessment which has shown that the telecare service will help you to continue living in your own home. Additional sensors are available that can, for example, alert staff if you leave home at an inappropriate time or do not move due to illness.

How much does the telecare service cost?

The sensors are installed free of cost but there is a small weekly charge to cover the monitoring service. This charge varies according to where you live but is typically only a few pounds per week.

Can I get help with the cost?

You may be able to get help if you receive certain benefits or have savings below a certain level. Talk to your telecare service provider for further advice.

For more information about benefits and how to claim them contact the Nottinghamshire Welfare Rights Service.

Who runs the telecare services?

The telecare services are a partnership between:
