The Occupational Therapy Service provide advice, equipment and adpatations to help you live independently in your own home. Occupational therapists visit you at home to look at the practical difficulties you are having and work in partnership with you to assess your needs.

Who can get help?

You can get help if you live in the county of Nottinghamshire (except Nottingham City) and have:

  • a permanent and substantial impairment and have considerable difficulty with everyday tasks
  • are having difficulty caring for someone with an impairment.

We do not provide equipment for temporary conditions such as a hip replacement or broken leg. Short term needs are the responsibility of the NHS. Ask to speak to the hospital occupational therapy service before you are discharged.

What help can I get?

Advice and Information
We may be able to work with you, or anyone who cares for you, to find different and easier ways of doing things.

Rehabilitation
We can also refer you for rehabilitation and other services.

Equipment/assistive devices
We can arrange for the supply of equipment to help you stay living in your own home.

For example: specialised shower seats, chair raise, toilet equipment.

Adaptations to your home
Alterations to your home may help you or anyone who cares for you to manage essential daily activities more easily.

For example: stair rails, grab rails, half steps.

If major adaptations are needed, such as a level-access shower, a stairlift or a ramp for wheelchair use, we can explain how these are funded and what help you may be able to get.

Direct Payments

Direct payments are available for the purchase of some kinds of equipment not provided by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Rehousing
If you can no longer manage in your present home we can advise you about what is involved in moving to a more suitable property.

Charges

Our information and advice is free. Any equipment we supply is on long term loan, free of charge. You may be expected to pay something towards the cost of major adaptations.

See the disabled facilities grants page for more information on how to get money to pay for adaptations to your home.

How do I get help?

Get in touch with the Customer Service Centre and ask to be put through to your local Occupational Therapy team.
