Short breaks for carers

Our short breaks schemes and services offer breaks from caring by providing services such as home sitting or day care.

Older People

Breaks at home

On this scheme, someone comes into your home to sit with the person you care for to give you a short break. To find out more about this scheme, talk to the person carrying out your assessment to find out whether they can arrange this service for you or provide you with vouchers to buy your own service.

Memories Social Club

The Bassetlaw branch of the Alzheimer's Society organises a social club for carers and people with dementia. It meets every week in Retford. Carers can stay at the club or take the opportunity to have some time to themselves.

A service is also provided in Worksop and outreach is provided to the villages.

Day care for people with dementia

Age Concern provides day care for people with dementia in Manton, Worksop and Mansfield.

Hassocks Asian Elders Day Centre

This scheme provides carers of Asian elders with a regular break. For further information contact Bilasha Phakey, tel: 0115 917 5800

Time Out

This scheme provides a home sitting service for African Caribbean elders, giving carers a short break. For further information, tel: 0115 875 8842

Bassetlaw MIND, Newark MIND and Central Nottinghamshire MIND offer sitting and befriending schemes. These provide carers with breaks.

Short Breaks

Short breaks are available within a selection of Residential / Nursing homes in Nottinghamshire and Skylarks Resort – Nottingham.

A Carers’ Assessment is needed.

24 Hour Respite Care Provision

This service is aimed at supporting the carer by providing a Care Worker to work (and sleep over if needed) in the home of the person who is being cared for. The carer is then able to have their own break. This service is limited to a number of sessions per person per year.

External Services

Activities for deaf adults

Nottinghamshire Deaf Society organises an evening social club for deaf adults (Wednesdays and alternate Saturdays) as well as a daytime club on Mondays and Wednesdays for the over 60’s. Contact 0115 970 0516 (telephone/minicom) for further information. They have a 24 hour minicom answering machine on 0115 847 5200.

Neurological conditions

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – The MS Society offers a home care service to people with MS and other neurological conditions. The scheme offers carers a minimum break of 12 hours For further information contact Janet Foster, tel: 01455 559 660, e-mail: mshomeresp@aol.com

Brain injury – Day care is available at Headway House for people with brain injuries. Support and advice for carers is also available. For further information, telephone 0115 967 9669.

Crossroads

A charity offering support to carers to allow them time to be themselves.  Provide Carer Support Workers to work with carers, usually in their own home. For details of your local scheme, telephone 0845 450 0350 or visit their website www.crossroads.org.uk

Children and young people and their families

Play schemes

  • NORSACA

  • The Nottingham Deaf Society
    Provides a range of activities for children with hearing loss and their siblings. tel: 0115 970 0516 or visit www.nottsdeaf.org.uk/main.htm
  • APTCOO ("A Place To Call Our Own")
    Provides play for disabled children in the north of the County. tel: 01623 629902
  • The Play Centre (for disabled children)
    Provides play during school holidays at the Play Centre, Mansfield Road, Nottingham. tel: 0115 969 3432

Breaks organised by us

Nottinghamshire County Council can provide you with short breaks through family centres and sitting and befriending schemes.

We can also arrange for you to go on week-long adventure holidays at Holme Pierrepoint. Children and young people stay at Holme Pierrepont's campsite in tents fitted out with small bedroom units. Activities on these holidays include day trips, canoeing and climbing. For more information, talk to your social worker or phone our Special Projects unit on 0115 846 5606.

We can also refer you for caravan breaks arranged through our Special Projects Unit. The Carers Centre can also offer caravan breaks. For more information, tel: 0115 985 8485.
