Carers assessments
Why have an assessment?
There may be services we can provide that give you short breaks from caring. You will need to have an assessment to see if you qualify.
An assessment also helps us to understand your needs as a carer and provide better services in the future.
How do I know if I'm entitled an assessment?
If you provide or intend to provide care regularly (about 20 hours per week or more), you are entitled to an assessment. If the person you care for refuses an assessment for him or herself, you are still entitled to an assessment of YOUR needs.
Central Government has produced a leaflet explaining your rights to an assessment:
- How to get help in looking after someone: www.carers.gov.uk/carersleaflet.htm
A carers guide to carers assessments.
Rethink has produced a guide for carers about their rights
- You care, you count: www.rethink.org
Help for relatives, partners and friends of people with a mental health problem.
